Health Benefits of Photobiomodulation

Skin Rejuvenation

Phototherapy has shown to improve cellular activation which is an important factor to treat cellulite [13]. Figure 5 shows the process the skin goes through once red wavelengths are used on the skin.

Through phototherapy, signs such as roughness, wrinkles, and fine lines can be reduced. Other skin conditions that red light therapy has been effective on are rosacea, eczema, acne, psoriasis, sores, cuts, burns, and bruising [13].

 Signs of Aging Skin Conditions
  • Wrinkles & Fine Lines
  • Acne
  • Rough skin
  • Eczema
  • Dry Skin
  • Rosacea
  • Sagging Skin
  • Psoriasis
  • Age Spots
  • Cold Sores/Herpes
  • Dull Skin Tone
  • Cuts/Scrapes/Burns/Bruises
  • Thin Skin
  • Photodamage

Table 1 lays out a few ways your face can show aging. As you get older, your skin starts to lose moisture and the epidermis becomes thinner. Thinner skin is prone to more wrinkles and will produce less collagen/elastin. Long term exposure to the sun can cause pigment cells, melanocytes, to multiply and create age spots.

With red light therapy, you can delay these signs and prevent skin conditions with consistent treatment.

LED therapy cleared up chronic psoriasis on patients 60% to 100% over five weeks in two 20 minute sessions [27].

    Sleep Deprivation

There are studies that correlate sleep deprivation with weight gain and an increase in body mass index [14].

Sleep deprivation affects the brain’s cognitive functions and body’s circadian rhythm, which balance emotions, the metabolism, immune system, and hormones [15,16].

Sleep deprivation has been associated with an increased sense of hunger, predisposing one to the risk of obesity [14, 16,17].

When sleep deprived, there is an increase of salt retention, inflammatory markers, and ghrelin levels in the body [14]. The two hormones that regulate food intake decrease conversely [14].

This leads a sleep deprived person to crave foods that are high in carbohydrates and fat [14].

Red light therapy can be used as a non-invasive therapy to treat sleep disorders. It can increase production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates the body’s circadian clock [18].

Experiments with sleep restriction have demonstrated that lights of different color temperature affect the way melatonin is secreted [17,19].

Exposure to red lights increase cortisol concentrations while exposure to blue light, emitted from electronics, suppresses melatonin [20].

Red light therapy could improve sleep for those with sleep disorders and disturbances and decrease headaches[21].

    Fat Loss & Body Contouring

Figure 4. Fat Loss Achieved Through RLT

Body contouring and fat loss can be achieved through the use of red light therapy. The benefit of RLT is that it is non-invasive and emits little heat, vibration, and sound [23,24].

The red wavelength can safely contour the thighs, hips, and waist by removing subcutaneous fat [22].

There is a correlation between increased body-mass-index and elevated inflammatory markers, which are responsible for regulating many functions in the body [25].

Insulin sensivitity, blood pressure, and metabolism are affected when inflammatory markers are thrown out of balance [26].

Becoming obese can come with other associated prognosis such as coronary heart disease, heart failure, and diabetes [26].

A study found that a group using LED therapy versus one that did not had lower blood glucose levels 24 hours after the last session [27].
